headstrong podcast i’d love to welcome 00:09 everybody watching today go grab a tea a 00:12 coffee your lunch maybe your dinner 00:14 depends the time zone that you’re 00:15 sitting in and get comfortable for about 00:18 the next 30 minutes i’m so excited to 00:20 have 00:21 jaden catherine alberts on with us today 00:25 um we’re really going to be super 00:27 organic here in this conversation we 00:29 have so many things to celebrate uh one 00:33 jade and catherine work a lot uh with 00:35 folks like you and i entrepreneurs 00:38 so they do a lot uh when it comes to 00:41 peer guidance 00:42 investment i have to do a shout out 00:45 though to both of these awesome folks 00:47 today that they just celebrated 20 years 00:50 of what it bliss so congratulations you 00:53 guys that that alone is a huge milestone 00:56 and especially when you’re coming 00:58 through pandemic 01:00 and you’re still celebrating love so 01:02 congratulations 01:03 and along with that they’ve got two 01:05 beautiful uh girls that growing they’re 01:08 raising to be leaders i’m sure 01:10 so we could go anywhere we could talk 01:12 about love and marriage we could talk 01:14 about being entrepreneurs um but today 01:17 we’re actually here to talk a little bit 01:18 more on a serious note about mental 01:20 health and how you navigate through that 01:24 so i love the t-shirts today too both of 01:27 you not alone it’s okay to not be okay 01:29 so maybe we can talk 01:31 as well about what what do we do after 01:34 we have that conversation and say it’s 01:35 okay not to be okay what are those next 01:37 steps 01:49 i think pamela froze so i think so 01:52 so friends please feel free what are 01:56 some of those next steps she was just 01:58 about to ask you 02:01 well at least she’s got a good look on 02:02 her face and it’s not oh there she’s 02:03 back anyway 02:06 did i did i freeze up was it like it’s a 02:09 weird luck yeah 02:11 oh you look good it was it was a good it 02:13 wasn’t a midnight 02:15 okay 02:19 so did you catch what i said jade about 02:21 i did yeah we did um i mean i think the 02:24 you know any time those next steps it’s 02:27 it’s about open communication and and 02:29 and being honest and talking and 02:32 and i think that’s and a very important 02:34 part of 02:36 you know of moving forward once you’ve 02:38 kind of realized the problem that’s 02:40 there and and and 02:42 no one ever knows a solution or how long 02:44 it’ll take or what it’s going to take to 02:46 get there but you know being there for 02:48 each other reaching out to other people 02:50 for help using your network using you 02:53 know people that have been there and i 02:55 mean 02:56 you know connie and i have talked about 02:57 this before we’ve been there you both 02:59 have been on the shows and and that’s 03:01 exactly one of the best things that we 03:03 can do is making sure that you’re you’re 03:05 not alone and asking for help is not a 03:07 sign of weakness and 03:08 and being there for 03:10 and having people just there to listen 03:12 to you and and that was a really really 03:14 important first step um when it came to 03:17 to myself and and catherine and and i’ll 03:20 let her kind of dive into you know her 03:22 next steps when when we were starting 03:24 our you know our recovery 03:27 a wonderful thanks jaden and catherine 03:29 what’s your 03:30 your input on that 03:33 yeah i you know i think it’s um 03:36 you know every 03:38 healing journey is different for people 03:41 it really is and um 03:44 the biggest thing uh when you’re going 03:46 through it you don’t think you’re gonna 03:49 get out 03:50 it is and it’s true for a lot of people 03:52 when they’re going they’re struggling 03:53 with mental health 03:54 and it’s that sense of hope right you 03:56 need to have some hope 03:58 that it is going to get better and 04:02 i know it was helpful for me 04:05 in having a big network 04:08 whether it was of professionals whether 04:10 it was friends 04:12 obviously family during coved um i was 04:16 stuck 04:17 just the two of us a lot right so we had 04:19 to talk a lot 04:21 and i had to talk about some of my 04:22 struggles and um you know i had family 04:25 members that reached out to me every 04:27 single day and checking in how i was 04:29 doing 04:30 so 04:31 you know the biggest part 04:33 um 04:34 is having that network you know how you 04:37 know the saying that says 04:39 um 04:39 it takes a village to raise a child 04:42 i really believe that too with mental 04:44 health it takes a village it truly does 04:49 that 04:50 that’s remarkable and i love the fact 04:52 that you know in your mess what i’m 04:54 hearing right now is the message of how 04:56 brave you were coming forward 04:59 and making that step 05:00 to let people that love you and worry 05:03 about you and that you’re so important 05:05 to know that that you weren’t okay right 05:09 yeah it’s it’s really

today on the show we are interviewing 00:08 jade alberts now jade is a founder of 00:11 peer guidance and what he does he 00:13 focuses on helping startups to move 00:16 through the stages of angel investing 00:18 and venture capital investing and he’s 00:20 really just a massive proponent in this 00:22 space he’s made an exit himself he’s 00:25 helped others to exit from their 00:26 businesses and he’s looking for kind of 00:28 that next piece along the way but he’s 00:31 also aware of entrepreneurs sort of 00:33 mental health and making sure that if he 00:35 doesn’t have the answer someone in his 00:37 ecosystem does now we are lucky enough 00:40 that he contributed an article to 00:42 askthebusinessexpert.com and it’s called 00:45 how do i get startup funding for my 00:47 business and in there he goes through 00:49 six terrific steps that you can you know 00:52 have as a takeaway that you can actually 00:53 use to get startup funding in your 00:55 business and also you’re gonna get a 00:57 chance to reach out to jade himself 00:58 because he gives his contact information 01:00 at the end of this terrific interview 01:02 but with that in mind i want to take you 01:03 right there here’s the interview with 01:05 jade alberts jade welcome to the show it 01:08 is so good to have you here 01:10 yeah thanks for uh thanks for inviting 01:11 me gordon i’m always uh i’m always 01:13 pumped to share my uh knowledge and 01:15 stories about uh the great things that 01:17 are going on with entrepreneurship in uh 01:19 our wonderful province of alberta 01:22 well and alberta and beyond in terms of 01:24 the advice you’ve been able to give in 01:25 terms of because like we were so lucky 01:27 for the 01:28 askthebusinessexpert.com where you 01:29 contributed an article talking about you 01:31 know six great ways to get um you know 01:34 funding for your startup for for small 01:36 businesses and i’m looking forward today 01:38 to digging into that article but before 01:40 we kind of get started on that um i 01:42 wanted to take a second like if you had 01:43 to introduce yourself what would you 01:45 tell people 01:47 well i guess there’s lots of ways to do 01:49 that but professionally uh you know i’m 01:52 the founder of pure guidance purpose 01:53 before profit i’m an entrepreneur angel 01:55 investor and i love helping startups 01:58 grow scale and exit i myself have exited 02:00 a business i’ve helped three others exit 02:02 a business 02:03 and just connecting with like-minded 02:05 people 02:07 it just it just gives me passion and 02:09 drives my 02:10 my my true inner entrepreneurship um you 02:13 know to give back 02:15 well and i know one of the core 02:16 philosophies that you bring up in the 02:18 article and i’ve seen it all over your 02:20 website is this idea especially because 02:22 you’re working in a space where you’ve 02:24 had success and not many people get to 02:26 make an exit i mean that’s 02:27 percentage-wise it wouldn’t be as many 02:29 but you’re able to do that successfully 02:31 but you’ve got this idea of telling it 02:33 like it is yeah when you say that why is 02:36 it important to you and and what do you 02:37 mean when you say that kind of thing 02:40 uh it’s basically just 02:42 being honest is is it’s a nicer way of 02:45 saying that right without saying that 02:46 you need to be honest uh it’s so 02:49 important to tell people what 02:51 they they need to hear it’s not about 02:54 telling them what they want to hear they 02:55 got their families and friends and and 02:57 things like that to tell them that you 02:58 know what’s good go ahead but what they 03:00 do need is someone to come down there 03:02 and give them the brutal truth and it 03:04 might not always be brutal it might be 03:05 great truth it might be holy holy smokes 03:07 this is great i had a conversation with 03:09 a with um a team today and they are 03:12 doing awesome things and they don’t need 03:14 peer guidance as help like so it’s like 03:15 holy smokes i can make three or four 03:17 introductions to you you guys are doing 03:18 great keep doing what you’re doing and 03:20 we’ll go from there and you know that’s 03:22 not always the case either but it’s 03:24 really important to make sure that 03:26 you’re honest with these people you’re 03:27 telling them exactly what uh 03:29 you know the advice that they may need 03:32 to grow and of course you’re there to 03:34 help them if they if they want the help 03:36 well and no knowing that you’ve walked 03:38 in their path in a sense they must get a 03:41 lot of assurance from that so that when 03:43 you go to say 03:44 the things that they need to hear i’m 03:46
